What is 1-for-1 therapy?
Our 1-for-1 therapy service means that for every session you pay for, we provide one free session to someone living in a low-income country who can't afford therapy
Many people are unable to access therapy and mental health care for many reasons, one of the main ones being finances. Our 1-for-1 therapy helps us break down this barrier by providing free care to those who can’t afford it.

Answers to some questions you might have
Your safety, privacy and confidentiality is our number one priority. We follow strict data protection guidelines including that of the EU GDPR and UK GDPR to ensure that your data is as secure as possible.
We’ll never sell your data to any third parties, and the information you do provide us with is used only for the things you’ve given explicit consent for.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Although we keep all of your data and therapy sessions strictly confidential, it’s very important to note that we also have a duty to keep you and those around you safe from harm. If your therapist has reason to believe that your life or the life of someone around you is in danger or in harm’s way, they are legally and morally obliged to break confidentiality and notify the appropriate authorities and / or your emergency contact. We also have a legal obligation to share your information if it’s requested by a governmental court. We will however, do our best to share as little data as possible and share only what is absolutely necessary to keep you and those around you safe.
We’ll always try to tell you first before we break confidentiality unless we are forced not to notify you by law. In any case, even in legal proceedings, we’ll share as little information as possible and only what is absolutely required by law.
Unfortunately at the moment our service is only available for adults over the age of 18.
This means that we’re not the best therapy provider for everyone. You can easily check if you are eligible for therapy with us by taking a short quiz here here.

Your therapist will use your first therapy session as an opportunity to get to know you in a more general way. They will use this time to assess if they’re the right person to help you, and which type of therapy method might be most beneficial for you.
During this session, they will conduct an informal assessment and at the end of the session they will let you know if they will be able to start treating you, or if you should look for an alternative therapist instead.
It’s quite natural and very common to feel a little bit nervous before your first therapy session!
But keep in mind that you’re just having a conversation, and that you’re free to share as little or as much as you want to.
Therapy sessions will differ for every person as everyone is different.
Sessions at Gaia Medical last for 50 minutes, and the way that your sessions are structured and what you will discuss depends on:
- What type of therapy you’re having
- What type of problems you want to work through
Your therapist may go through specific exercises with you, or the therapy session may end up being more of a conversation about how you’re feeling.
Some topics that might come up during your sessions include:
- Your current & past relationships
- Your childhood
- Your past experiences
- Situations you find difficult
- How you feel & behave
- How you see & experience the world around you
- How you communicate with others
- Problems or issues you’re currently struggling with
Remember, you’re in full control of what you do and don’t want to share. If you don’t feel comfortable discussing a certain topic, you should mention this to your therapist.
Your therapist should support you in talking about only what you feel comfortable talking about.
Our sessions all take place online through a secure network either using video call (or via audio call if you don’t feel comfortable using video).
There are different types of talking therapies that can be used during your session depending on your needs, although our therapists mainly use a type of talking therapy called CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy). You can learn more about CBT here.
We currently accept the following payment methods:

The price we set for our therapy sessions helps us:
- Provide a high-quality service
- Pay our therapists fairly
- Cover our operational business costs
As a social enterprise, we also place a lot of emphasis on our social mission of providing free therapy sessions to those who can’t afford to pay.
With our 1-to-1 therapy program, your payment not only covers your therapy session, but it also provides a free therapy session for someone in need.
Most of your payment goes directly to the therapist to cover the therapy sessions they provide, with a small portion going to Gaia Medical as an administrative fee.
Here’s an exact breakdown of your payment:
- 40% of your payment goes to your therapist
- 40% of your payment goes to a therapist to provide a free therapy session to someone in need
- 20% goes to Gaia Medical as an administrative fee
This is why 80% of your payment goes to our therapists
In addition to paying a therapist for their time, did you know that in the UK, private therapists pay for things like professional insurance and continuing education courses? Not to mention, they spend time before and after sessions preparing for your session and writing up session notes.
This is why 20% of your payment goes to Gaia Medical
This covers our basic business costs, such as insurance, software, and our team’s salaries, in order to provide you with a high-quality online therapy platform, educational content, and personalised customer support.
Our company’s mission is to provide therapy to everyone who needs it, but we can’t do it alone. We need the community to come together so that everyone can get the support they need.
Yes, absolutely! We provide the same exact level of service to all of our therapy clients, regardless of their financial status.
Whether you are a paying client or a free client, you will have the same access to all of our therapists and booking platform.
No, not at all. We don’t want any of our clients to feel pressured to continue having therapy if they want to stop.
To avoid this from happening, we pool payments from multiple paying clients until we’re able to fund a full course of therapy (12 free sessions) for someone in need. That way, their ability to attend therapy does not fall on one single person’s shoulders, and it is fully funded before they even begin having therapy.
This helps us ensure that there are no interruptions to the care of someone receiving free therapy with us.
To qualify for free therapy sessions with us, clients must be residing in the Middle East or North Africa, and must be earning less than $6,000 (approximately £4,355) per year.
Anyone receiving free therapy must first complete an eligibility assessment to verify their income level before they are accepted into our free therapy programme.
You don’t have to turn on your video during your therapy session if you don’t feel comfortable doing so.
However, it’s good to note that turning on your video during therapy may help you and your therapist build a connection faster. Non-verbal cues, like nodding or smiling, can be missed when the camera is off, but they often help people feel more connected.
However, the most important thing is for you to feel comfortable during therapy! If you would prefer not to turn your camera on, that’s completely fine and up to you. Just let us know your preference when booking your session, and we will let your therapist know.
Out of respect for our therapists and our other clients, we have a 48-hour cancellation policy.
This means you must cancel or reschedule your appointment at least 48 hours before the time of your appointment. Providing at least 48-hours of notice still allows other clients to fill your time slot.
If you cancel less than 48-hours before your session, we keep your full payment to pay the therapist for their time. We allow a maximum of 2 late cancellations per client.
If you cancel more than 48-hours before your session, you can either choose to reschedule your session to a new time or cancel entirely and receive a full refund.
